Joe TomatoItalian Market & Deli (719) 584-3007

A sandwich counter and an Italian market on South Main.

Joe Tomato is both halves of the old idea. Sandwiches built to order at the deli counter — and out front, a market with fresh produce, imported Italian goods and piñon nuts.

The Counter

Our sandwiches have names.

Everything is built to order at the deli case — cold cuts sliced, bread filled, wrapped and handed over. Here are the ones people come in asking for.

The house sandwich

The Bootlegger

Three cured meats, a soft goat cheese to cut them, and our own hot pepper relish on top. It is the sandwich we put our name behind.

“Update to the menu! If you haven’t been in lately, we have a new sandwich!”

AT THE CASE

Sliced to order.

Cured Italian meats, cut when you ask for them — for a sandwich, or wrapped up to take home.

Half of it is

a deli.

Sandwiches built to order at the counter. Cold cuts sliced while you wait, bread filled, wrapped and handed over.

The counter
The other half is

a market.

Fresh produce, imported Italian goods and piñon nuts — the shop you walk through on your way to the register.

The Market

Out front, the shelves.

Most places in town are a deli or a market. Joe Tomato is both, in one room — so the shopping happens on the way to the register.

Shelled piñon nuts in a carved olive-wood bowl beside a wooden spoon.
A Colorado thing

Piñon nuts

Not every Italian market in the country carries them. This one is in Pueblo, so it does.

01 Baskets and crates of onions, garlic, chillies and squash on the shelves of an indoor market.

Fresh produce

Out where you can pick through it, a few steps from the sandwich you just ordered.

02 Dried Italian pasta in a glass jar beside sacks of dried beans on a wooden counter.

Imported Italian goods

The imported pantry — the things a recipe asks for by name, and you would rather not substitute.

The pastry case

Cannoli, and the rest of the case.

The case keeps Italian pastry alongside the meats and the market. Cannoli are the one people ask for by name.

Lady fingers turn up too — we say so when they come in.

Cannoli shells filled with sweet ricotta cream and dusted with sugar.
Inside

A market you can smell from the door.

Bread, the cured meats, the shelves out front — and a sandwich wrapped up to take with you.

A basket piled with crusty loaves, rolls and seeded bread.
Sliced prosciutto and salami fanned out on a wooden board beside jars of preserves.
A filled roll wrapped in a plain paper bag, ready to take away.
